No single political race carries as much importance for this region's future as the one now being waged for Sacramento County sheriff. Whoever wins will take the helm of a troubled organization, one plagued by factionalism, low morale, extreme budget challenges and more. Beware candidates touting new "tough on crime" policies and hold on to your wallet. Year after year, this state spends a steadily increasing portion of its budget on the prison system without increasing public safety. Yet candidates in each election cycle try to appear ever tougher. If you are a customer of Pacific Gas and Electric, you probably are feeling pretty sore right now. Not only does PG&E charge higher rates than some utilities (such as SMUD), but it is spending vast sums of money on a self-serving constitutional amendment, Proposition 16. Last week, we asked readers to name the single issue they thought candidates should be addressing, but were ignoring, in this election season.
